This is my blog where I write about music, and myself. Vaudeville, burlesque, blues, jazz, novelties, and whatever else I feel like posting. Mostly from my own LPs and 78s. Comments and feedback always appreciated. Please do not link directly to mp3s. It's rude.

Baltimore Oriole

Hoagy Carmichael & Orchestra

I have some good stuff coming. I don't even like Hoagy Carmichael. Plus, this song isn't about Baltimore. Not really.

That Tori Amos Baltimore Song

Amongst the world of songs about Baltimore, this one has a certain mythology to fans of that zany Maryland-born redhead.
As for me, I think it's just a terrible song about Baltimore.

Flannigan's Night Off

Miss Jones & Mr. Spencer
Flannigan's Night Off
1909

I would know all about acts like Miss Jones & Mr. Spencer if I had this book. Maybe I'll get it with my big ole tax refund, to stimulate the economy. Yeah right.
Miss Jones is actually Ada Jones, a popular performer who has made many recordings, some of which can be found on releases by such labels as Archeophone.
I can't tell if this song/sketch is comedy or what. The sound is very bad most of the time. She's got a lovely voice though.
I found this site that sells mp3s of lots of old recordings like this one. I can't listen their version of it to hear if the sound is any better but I'd assume so, although they declare they do no noise reduction (but have better equipment to begin with).
I did a LOT of hiss reduction.

random stuff

Oh man this is on ebay. LUST.
Nothing special.. it's just the record player I have but BLUE.

Califone 1420K

I don't think it's rare or anything, they probably sell for $10 usually.. I actually don't look often.

Speaking of ebay goodness I can't believe there are no bids on this copy of Lili St. Cyr's (english) autobiography.

I already have it but I always look at Lili stuff on ebay and last time I think it went for $200.
I'm actually not affiliated with these ebay sellers. I just happened to be looking for Lili St. Cyr slides and Califone needles.

ok that's all for now.

Baltimore Blues

"Take me back baby.. with my drunken ways."

"Papa" Charlie McCoy. Great stuff. Many good songs to be found. "Baltimore Blues" is found in CD form on Volume 1 of the complete works of the McCoy brothers.
Not to be confused with this Charlie McCoy, who looks pretty lame..

noise reduced for your pleasure

Sam Lanin and His Orchestra
Vocal Chorus: Scrappy Lambert
The Song Is Ended
1929?

Ruth Etting down there hit it big with this Irving Berlin song but I like the Annette Hanshaw version best.
I put this record through the surface noise reduction ringer in Cool Edit. That's what I use.
I think I need a new needle.
I grabbed the record from the Salvation Army a few years ago, because it's brown.

I was just exploring the wonderful world of youtube jazz enthusiasts. There's some live videos, home-made photo montages, and stills with music.
The song "Cryin' For The Carolines" goes along with my theme of the sadness of people who've left the country for the big city. The Ruth Etting version is good and sad.

Other versions of the song can be found on Archeophone Records' awesome "Hit Of The Week" volume 1, and here are some youtube videos:

also, check out Ruth Etting!

Neat, huh?
